Communication â⬠Differences Between Men and Women
Communication ââ¬â Differences Between Men and Women According to Fiona Sheridan, ââ¬Å"The consequences of differences in linguistic activity between men and women in the workplace are enormous (2007). â⬠Women create feelings of closeness by conversing with their friends or loved ones. They have a tendency to communicate by consensus. This means, they use the information gathered by other women and make a decision based on the wishes of the group. ââ¬Å"Men, on the other hand, seek to establish and maintain status and dominance (Tannen, 1990). â⬠When communication is not effective, it can have severe consequences on an organization. Each gender must decide what it is that they are looking for, decide how they want to receive it, what order they want to receive it, and decide how they want to process it. We must realize that each communication style has certain strengths. ââ¬Å"To have successful working relationships with members of the opposite sex, you also have to know why those differences matter and what to do about them. â⬠(Kelley, 2010, p13) Both men and women can contribute and offer a lot.Margery Weinstein said it best when she said that, ââ¬Å"Each gender is a culture unto itself, one that comes with certain norms and standards that can be misunderstood by those of the opposite sex (Weinstein, 2006, p8). â⬠Below are some differences in the way women and men communicate: Ways Women communicate: 1)Women more likely talk to other women about problems. 2)Women are more relationship oriented. 3)Woman share experiences and ask questions. Ways Men communicate: 1)Men keep problems to themselves. )Status and dominance are important to men. 3)Men give information rather than ask questions. There is definitely an impact in the workplace when there is a difference in communication between men and women. The difference in the communication styles can lead to confusion between the two parties. This can create unnecessary tension betw een the two genders. The key is to realize that either gender can effectively communicate as long as they are equally valid in getting the message relayed to its intended target. Discussion The main topic was whether there was a difference in how men & women communicate and whether it has an impact in the workplace. ââ¬Å"Beyond gender-related communication differences, awareness of gender-related communication barriers may play a key role in the effectiveness of communication (Schneider, 2007). â⬠It would prove beneficial for companies to teach their employees how to have effective communication when gender may be involved. The bulk of my research was done by utilizing information gathered from the internet and ProQuest. Valuable insight was collected on this topic. Many people do believe there are differences in how the two genders communicate. ââ¬Å"If we consider both communication styles and associated values in practice, we will increase chances of all people representin g either style to join the communication process, regardless of their gender (Rawluszko, 2009, p54). â⬠?

Flag Burning A Crime Against America essays
Flag Burning A Crime Against America essays Flag Burning: A Crime Against America? Flag burning can be and usually is a very controversial issue with people. Many people believe that the American flag stands for something important and shouldnt be destroyed in that manner. Others believe that flag burning is a statement that one should be able to make without major repercussions. Both sides have valid opinions and both sides state their case well. Although I am neither nor or against the burning of the flag, I believe the right should not be taken away. I believe that if a group of people have valid reasons and a valid point to make by obliterating a flag in such a way, they should have the right to do it. The people who are against flag burning seem to generally be those who have served this country through war and through other such ways. They are older people who believe that this country is quite wonderful if not almost perfect. They have a strong sense of patriotism to this country and would die for what it stands for: liberty and freedom. They could compare it to the burning of crosses in front of a church or to the way the Nazis turned a very beautiful symbol into a racial and religious hate badge for murderers. Disrespect for tradition is what it boils down to. From a young age we are conditioned to blindly respect that flag hanging from a pole and to pledge out allegiance to it without even knowing what it truly is. It has been tradition for at least three generations. People who have been prisoners of war or people who fought for this country have a reason to respect it so much. The have fought long and hard for what we have and respect it. Some of our generation d oesnt realize how lucky we have it. A child of this generation could debate how good and pure and wonderful this country is and could show you how we have had our liberty and freedom taken away to the point that we really dont have any. True, we have had our freedo...

The 3 Best Extracurricular Activities for Your College App SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Extracurricular activities are an important part of your college application. The things that you choose to do outside of the classroom help college admission officers understand your personality in a way that your grades and test scores canââ¬â¢t show. With so many activities to choose from, how do you know which ones are going to make the biggest impact on your application? Do colleges prefer students with traditional activities like sports and student council, or are you better off if you have something unconventional on your activity list? If you're unsure about how to strategize a list of activities that will make an impact on your application, read on to see the three best extracurricular activities that will really get you noticed. What Are the BestExtracurricular Activities to Have on YourCollege Applications? Many students worry that they have to play a sport to get into a good college, or that there are some specific extracurricular activities that college admission advisors consider an automatic admissions ticket. If you have suspected that this kind of activity bias exists, I have good news: colleges do not really care which specific activities you choose to do. However, they are hoping to understand certain things about you through your activities. Your extracurricular activities show colleges aspects of your personality that your grades and test scores canââ¬â¢t. Though admissions officerscan also get to know about your ââ¬Å"intangibleâ⬠qualities through your essays and letters of recommendation, extracurriculars are important because they show that you walk the walk. Think you have leadership skills? Well, your extracurricularsare where you prove it. There are a few specific things that colleges are always hoping to see in their studentsââ¬â¢ activities. They include: Passion. Your activities are supposed to be a reflection of you and what you care about. Admissions officers can usually tell when you're just doing activities to pad out your resume. Colleges love students who are passionate because, more often than not, they are the ones who will stick with something through thick and thin and go on to change the world. You can show passion by focusing on a couple activities and dedicating a significant amount of time to them. Leadership. Leaders are the people who will be at the forefront of change and the first to take on new challenges. Since colleges are looking to educate and shape the leaders of tomorrow, they love to see students who are taking initiative to be leaders through their extracurricular activities. You can do this by leading a group or activity, being in charge of a project, or otherwise motivating or directing other students. Impact. How have you changed your activity for the better? Have you expanded membership or the amount of activities your extracurricular does? If you saw a problem, did you fix it? Once again, colleges are looking for the people who are going to change the world someday. In your activities, you can show them that you're the type of person who takes something and leaves it better than you found it. If you need some inspiration to help find a great extracurricular, we have a list of hundreds of activities that you can try. With commitment, over time you could show the above qualities in any of the activities on the list. But if you'd like more guidance, there is a surefire combination of activities you can pursue in high school that will show off a range of your best traits. In fact, as long as you have thesethree types of activities, you wonââ¬â¢t have to worry nearly as much about what else you choose to do with your free time during high school! The Perfect Extracurricular Activity Combination For students who are unsure about what types of activities to pursue in high school, you can easily impress admissions officers by making sure that you have the following three kinds of activities on your list. They are: The Academic Activity The Community Service Activity The Personality Activity Colleges are out to find students whoare mature, have a good sense of direction and purpose, and have a strong sense of self. Students like this know what their passions are, are willing to put in the time and effort to make an impact in their chosen extracurriculars, and are more likely to be leaders. Though there are many valid combinations of extracurriculars out there and you will not be penalized if you do not follow the above structure, this combination of activities allows you to show off your personality and talents while also showing an awareness of and concern for the larger world. To show why this is the perfect combination, let's examine each activity in a bit more detail and discuss why it impresses admission officers. Want to build the best possible college application? The Academic Activity The first key type of extracurricular activity is the academic activity. This is an activitythat is somehow related to what you're hoping to study in college. What Are Some Examples? For example, if you want to get a degree in journalism, you could be working foryour school newspaper. A math major could participate in Math Bowl or some other competitive form of the subject. A future medical student may have volunteered at the local hospital. Why Should You Do It? There's no better way to provethat you're really interested in your chosen field of study than to show admissions officers that you live and breathe it already on a daily basis. Remember that old saying that work isnââ¬â¢t work as long as youââ¬â¢re doing what you love? By doing an extracurricular related to your studies, you're showing that you have real passion for the topic and know what you're getting yourself into. Why Do Colleges Love It? Colleges want to admitstudents who are hard-working, passionate, and who will potentially be innovators in that field in the future. This is a great way to show that your studies are also your passion. You arenââ¬â¢t just pursuing that engineering degree because itââ¬â¢s going to make you money someday; youââ¬â¢re pursuing it because if you didnââ¬â¢t you wouldnââ¬â¢t be the person that you need to be. Students who are actively and passionately involved in their studies through an extracurricular are much more likely to make a difference in the field and potentially change the world. The Community Service Activity This activity is an extracurricularthat allows you to volunteer your time to work with people or for a cause in your community. What Are Some Examples? There are hundreds of ways to do community service. Itââ¬â¢s important to choose something that is related to a cause you actually care about and that you'll be able to commit to long enough to make an impact. Examples range from volunteering at a senior center, to tutoring students after school, to working in wildlife conservation. If you need more examples, check out our guide tothe nine best places to do community service. Why Should You Do It? There are a lot of benefits for high school students who are ready to put time and effort into community service. Service learning can be a great way to reinforce ideas that you've learned in the classroom. You can develop skills that will be necessary forcollege, such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Many students say that they experience personal development through community serviceand become more responsible andempathetic. Studies have also shown that people who volunteer reap health benefits because they feel better about themselves. See more about the benefits of community service for high school students here. Why Do Colleges Love It? Community service is a great extracurricular that can show that you're a concerned citizen and aspiring leader. Keep in mind that colleges are always looking for students who are going to be making a difference in the world. Community service shows that you have already taken the first step to do that. By showing that you cantake charge when you see an issue in your community and are willing to put in the time and effort needed to make a change, you're showing initiative, dedication, and perseverance. These are all traits that will help you be a successful student in college and an impactful human being well after you graduate. The Personality Activity This is an activity that showcases something special about youand your interests. What makes you tick? What's your secret passion? What Are Some Examples? Any activity that you do solely because you love it counts as a personality extracurricular. This is your chance to show colleges what you're passionate about. These activities may be surprising at first because they don't necessarily have anything to do with what you want to pursue academically or professionally. While an aspiring engineer may list her love of building robots as her personality activity, it's equally true that an aspiring astronomy major may have a passion for working backstage in theater productions. As long as it's an extracurricular you love doing, it can be used as a personality activity. Why Should You Do It? Personality activities are a chance for you to do something that's important to you and that you really love. Thereââ¬â¢s more to you than just what you intend to study. Everyone is moved by different things, and itââ¬â¢s important to pursue these passions. These activities are all about you and allow you to develop confidence and a sense of self that you might not get in the other activities. Why Do Colleges Love It? Colleges want to see the person behind the application, and this is where the personality activity comes in. Collegesare also concerned about creatingvibrant campus communities, and one way of doing this is admitting students with a lot of different interests who will be able to participate and contribute toareas beyond just what they're studying. They will appreciate that you have taken the time to develop these side passions and see you as a motivated and interesting person. The Bottom Line These three types of activities are a good place to start if you're stumped by how to make an impressive resume for college. But keep in mind that any combination of activities is just as valid - as long as you remember tomake a commitment, show leadership, and havean impact! What's Next? Definition and Examples of Verbiage in English
Definition and Examples of Verbiage in English Definition Verbiage is the use of more words than necessary to effectively convey meaning in speech or writing: wordiness. Contrast with conciseness. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary defines verbiage as [s]uperfluous abundance of words, tedious prose without much meaning, excessive wordiness, verbosity. See Examples and Observations below. Mencken EtymologyFrom the Old French, to chatterà Examples and Observations What I am afraid of is: verbiage.(Joseph Conrad, letter to Hugh Walpole, December 2, 1902)It is a midden and a criminal haunt and packed to the gills each split-up low deceiving house and alley with footpads and coiners and runners of poor women, with uncertificated pox-doctors and cat-gut spinners, with tripe-merchants and rumour-mongers and rabbit-breeders and slaughterers of the peace of the Lord. Why must your brother lodge there, Claffey? Could he not come here to us at Cockspur Street? He may do that yet, Claffey said.As for the man you call Sligdoes he not keep that infamous cellar where we lodged when we were freshly arrived?By the dripping blood of Christ! Vance said. I am sick of your verbiage. Slig is a sworn brother of mine. Slig gave you straw and a shelter for fourpence. Infamous cellar? It was a usual kind of cellar. I tell you, OBrienit was good, of its kind.Sick of my verbiage? the Giant said. Sick of my stories, also?I leave them to the brutes that want soothing.(Hil ary Mantel, The Giant, OBrien. Henry Holt, 1998) Excess Verbiage- Dont bore your audience with excess verbiage: be succinct.(Sharon Weiner-Green and Ira K. Wolf, How to Prepare for the GRE, 16th ed. Barrons Educational Series, 2005)- Using excess with verbiage is redundant. Verbiage by itself means wordiness or an excess of words. Thus, you could say that the phrase excess verbiage is verbiage.(Adrienne Robins, The Analytical Writer: A College Rhetoric, 2nd ed. Collegiate Press, 1996)- Part of the complexity of the problem with verbosity, wordiness and excess verbiage comes from the not uncommon tendency for individual people to use too many extra unnecessary words that are definitely not needed to make the actual clarity of the specific communication crystal clear.Lets rewrite that sentence, cutting out the verbiage: Verbosity is the use of more words than necessary for clear communication. Weve gone from 45 words to 12.(Timothy R. V. Foster, Better Business Writing. Kogan Page, 2002) Euphemisms and VerbiageEuphemisms are not, as many young people think, useless verbiage for that which can and should be said bluntly; they are like secret agents on a delicate mission, they must airily pass by a stinking mess with barely so much as a nod of the head. Euphemisms are unpleasant truths wearing diplomatic cologne.(Quentin Crisp, Manners from Heaven, 1984) Oratorical Verbiage[A] characteristic ingredient in all epideictic oratory and literature [is] the opportunity it affords the rhetor for self-display. . . . But this same opportunity for self-display runs the risk of deliquescing into crass showmanship, false posing, hollow oracularity, empty verbiage, mere rhetoricas it does in the Roman period known as the Second Sophistic, and does again in [Robert] Frosts weakest poems (cracker barrel wisdom, clever trivia; to some high moderns the ordure of the ordinary). This remains a standing temptation to any epideictic rhetor and marks an extreme distance from epideictics original concern with the health of the civic polity.(Walter Jost, Epiphany and Epideictic: The Low Modernist Lyric in Robert Frost. A Companion to Rhetoric and Rhetorical Criticism, ed. by Walter Jost and Wendy Olmsted. Blackwell, 2004) The Lighter Side of VerbiageStubb: Took you long enough, you dithering imbecile! Weve been waiting in that swamp for so long, Ill be pul ling leeches off me nether parts for ages!Jack Sparrow: Ah Stubb, your verbiage always conjures up such a lovely image.(Stephen Stanton and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, 2006) Pronunciation: VUR-bee-ij Alternate Spellings: verbage (generally regarded as an error)

Literature review of Fourteen Foorces of Magnetism Essay
Literature review of Fourteen Foorces of Magnetism - Essay Example It was built as a result of a lack of a real hospital in that location which led to the death of many local people with emergency medical conditions. Being the first and best hospital on the area, St. Lukeââ¬â¢s has one of the biggest positive images in that society and its respect surpasses all. It is with this image that made it be accredited as an inpatient rehabilitation unit (the only national one in that area) by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Most of the forces of magnetism in this organization are consistent with their intent. Some however have inconsistencies which according to research may be as a result of the organization being alone and of its kind for a long time and hence had enjoyed market monopoly and even when another hospital was unveiled, no changes were made and no one seems to notice these inconsistencies. One of the inconsistencies is in the fourth force about personnel policies and programs which advocated for competitive salaries and benefits. In the organization, this is not the case and most nurses especially are underpaid compared to the work they perform daily. Even though the organization strives to achieve force thirteen about interdisciplinary relationships being valued and upheld, doctors still look down upon other members of the health care team due to their differences in qualifications. This however does not seem to affect the overall quality of the health care being provided by the organization (Malloch and Oââ¬â¢Grady, 2010). The consistencies in force of magnetism have made the organization gain a lot of support from the surrounding community and this has improved the image of not only the hospital in general but also of its medical personnel. The fact that the hospital puts the needs of the community first at all times and even forgets about the needs of its own staff especially on
Nietzsches Critique of Liberalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Nietzsches Critique of Liberalism - Essay Example Against the backdrop of liberalism movement that was taking place in the late 17th century and early 18th century, Nietzsche claimed that democracy only worked to protect the rights of the majority, which included the general population compared to the liberal idea that democracy worked to protect the rights and interests of individual people (Ansell-Pearson, 1994). This view on liberalism strikes the right chord because, in every sense, democracy in the modern world is based on the rights of the majority against the rights of individuals. This means most constitutions, the world over, claim to protect the rights and privileges of individuals yet, on the other hand, the rights of the majority overrules. It is only in exceptional cases, which often involve the affluent in society, that this view is applied. The rich are always given their rights when they demand them. The idea of liberalism emphasized on protecting the rights of every individual, but according to Nietzsche, these individualsââ¬â¢ are usually the rich people in society. The liberals did not protect the rights of the general citizenry as they claimed. Instead, they were clustered in one group and their rights were determined as a wholeââ¬â¢. Nevertheless, the rights of the majority came in as a second priority since the liberals focused on securing the rights of the affluent in society. This means that the poor or middle income had no say; since the rich people were the main decision and policy makers because only their voice counted in key decision making. This notion created a slave mentality among such liberal states. According to Peters, et al (2003), Nietzsche also believed in the mastery of oneself. He believed that human beings should define their live according to themselves and rid themselves pity of the weak members of the society. In order for an individual to succeed in a society, he should not be tied to any equality standards, but be allowed to go grow beyond boarders in tandem with their abilities. This means that liberalism hindered the growth of individuals since it placed standards and emphasized on equality among individuals, yet each individual has the ability to grow beyond the average. He believed that liberalism emphasized on equality among members of the society, yet in the real sense not every human being has the same potential as the other. He envisioned a society where, individuals would have their own independence and

Why Do Chinese Students Choose To Study For First Degrees In UK Essay
Why Do Chinese Students Choose To Study For First Degrees In UK Universities - Essay Example Why Do Chinese Students Choose To Study For First Degrees In UK Universities? UK degrees are perceived to have greater career value than those offered in Chinese universities (Agelasto, 2001). Research question Why do Chinese students choose to study for first degrees in UK universities? Background This research study will basically involve the global expansion of Chinese students studying at UK universities. There has been declaration of policies in the UK for the expansion of both the absolute numbers of foreign students and their share of this huge Chinese market. Mainland China has been the largest component of this growth in the UK. Currently, they are by far the largest national group of overseas students in the UK, with numbers increasing by a factor of almost twenty over the ten years from 1994/5 to 2004/5. This study will focus on Chinese undergraduates, for whom the growth in numbers has been particularly marked ââ¬â from 245 to 20,820 in that ten-year period (Denscombe, 2010). These Chinese students comprise of a major input generally to the UK economy and particularly to the financial health of universities. Strategies for the expansion of the market share will benefit from a vivid understanding of the kind of demand and the customers in the market. There have been no detailed studies assessing the relevance of various factors believed to influence studentsââ¬â¢ decisions to study abroad. ... foreign students, this study will also contextualize and develop our understanding of the processes which are involved in individualsââ¬â¢ decision-making (Agelasto, 2001). Other information The Chinese studentsââ¬â¢ decisions to study in the UK however, should be understood based on the relevant conditions in the home country, which will include the various university options available there. This study therefore will also briefly include Chinese students who have opted to study at their local universities, so as to have a whole picture of the involved decision-making process and its theorization. Two broad theoretical positions have been used to account for developments in patterns of educational enrolment and the choices that lie behind them: human capital theory and positional competition theory. The former argues that expansion of demand for education reflects increases in the skill levels demanded by the economy, with increasing components of technical and scientific know ledge that require longer periods of more advanced education and training, precisely the situation in contemporary China, and the basis of the policy of ââ¬Ëmassificationââ¬â¢ of higher education. Rates of return on educational investment can be calculated and it is these that motivate social and individual decisions to invest in education (Hechanova-Alampay et al., 2002). Positional competition theory on the other hand, argues that the expansion of educational demand at increasingly higher levels of the system, as currently experienced in China, is the outcome of competition to increase oneââ¬â¢s educational standing relative to others. The labor market and education relationship is not one of providing necessary technical skills, but one which is mediated by the use of credentials as a screening device
